Building a Hymnal

After more than two years of review, discussion, and decision-making, the highly anticipated Celebrating Grace Hymnal is in its final phase of development. It went to the press in early 2009 for its scheduled release in spring 2010.

"We have placed emphasis on inclusive input from many people across the Baptist family," said Mark Edwards, Worship Resource Manager of the Hymnal. "Celebrating Grace is a hymnal built by Baptists for Baptists."

Input and feedback have been the developmental cornerstones of the Hymnal. Over the past year, Edwards has made almost 20 presentations, called HymnPosiums, across the nation. The programs provided insight into the review and selection process of materials for the Celebrating Grace Hymnal and a preview of the music, The Worship Matrix and online music resources. He also sought feedback and comments to share with the Hymnal's Editorial Board.

The level of inclusiveness found in the development of the Celebrating Grace Hymnal is atypical of most hymnals, and the change has received high praise from pastors, church musicians and laity from across the denomination.

"Most frequently, a hymnal is designed by a few editors who select the hymns," said J. Thomas McAfee, Chairman and President of Hallmark Systems, Inc., and Project Chair of the Celebrating Grace Hymnal. "We intentionally changed that development model. We deliberately sought input from musicians, music scholars, pastors and lay leaders. We want this Hymnal to be the worship and music resource that church leaders and their congregations look forward to using."

One of the resources demonstrated at the preview event was The Worship Matrix, which will be available concurrently with the Hymnal. The unique online component continues to receive high marks from music directors and pastors even in its prototype stage.

Primarily, though not exclusively, designed to complement Celebrating Grace, the Matrix expands the use of the Hymnal and assists church leaders in their planning of worship services. It will also offer supplemental music resources, including orchestrations, keyboard, handbell accompaniments, children's materials, congregational anthems, and more, that will be available as downloads to enhance use of the hymn.

"Through The Worship Matrix, we have addressed many of the worship needs we heard requested by the churches," said McAfee. "No matter the size of the church or the congregation or the music program, the Matrix will have resources to enhance the worship experience."

Pre-sales for the Celebrating Grace Hymnal began in January 2009. The Hymnal will be in churches by Easter 2010.
